A Brief Overview of the Leadership Situation

In 1804 Haiti became the first successful slave revolt thanks to the heroic leadership of men like Toussaint Louverture, Henry Christophe and J.J. Dessalines. Given their particular context of struggle, they valued bravery and intrigue over principles and a commitment to virtue and truth. Today, the Haitian leadership models are still weak in the areas of trust, accountability, and the pursuit of the common good for all.

Church leadership tends to be better structured and more reliable. However, it can also be too traditional and not relevant to the changes in society. In general leaders of the Haitian Christian movement would do well to seek and develop a more balanced Christian worldview, taking into consideration a holistic vision of the claims of the gospel, while pursuing the Christian character traits and the good leadership skills necessary to influence a deep change in people and society for the sake of God's kingdom here on earth.

So, it is a worthy effort to be involved in leadership development now more than ever. The Barnabas Christian Leadership Center is committed to serve the needs of a new generation of leaders. We invite people to partner with us and to pray with us. Here are some prayer concerns:

  • For God to raise a new generation of leaders who will lead with boldness and integrity
  • For revival in the Haitian church that will translate in transformed lives and a significant impact on the nation, both spiritually and culturally
  • Jobs and housing for the Haitian people; hope and encouragement for the generation that survived the earthquake of January 12, 2010.
